Guest speaker – Colin McCusker, Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council
Over his 25 year career Councillor Colin McCusker has amassed a wealth of experience in industry, government and politics.
Following his graduation from Ulster University Coleraine in 1992 with an honours degree in History, Colin worked for 12 years in the food, drink and hospitality industry within the Golf Holdings Group which owns a number of off-licences and bars. He was employed as a manager within Winemark, then as a Marketing Assistant in James E McCabe, and as a Branch Manager for Russells Foodstore on the Gilford Road in Portadown. Colin also worked for a further 7 years as an Acquisitions Executive for Henderson Wholesale, charged with securing supply to the best convenience stores across Northern Ireland.
After 20 years in Northern Ireland’s food and drink sector Colin became involved in politics full time. He has worked for the Ulster Unionist Party since 2012 where he has held the role of General Secretary for the past 5 years. Initially co-opted as a Councillor to Craigavon Borough Council in February 2012, Colin progressed to Deputy Mayor in June 2013 and then to the role of Mayor from June 2014 – March 2015.
In May 2014, Colin was elected to represent Lurgan on the new enlarged Armagh City, Banbridge & Craigavon Borough Council. He is currently the Chair of the Economic Development & Regeneration Department within the council. The Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon region is the largest council area outside of Belfast, both in terms of population and economic activity. It is home to Northern Ireland’s second largest manufacturing workforce, with internationally recognised brands such as Ulster Carpets and Thompson Aeroseating. It is also a hub for life sciences companies such as Almac Group and is the food producing heartland of Northern Ireland, with major brands including Moy Park, Linwoods, Irwin’s and Fane Valley all located in the region.
Colin believes that the ABC region is officially the best place to live and work in Northern Ireland, due to its affordable housing, low commuting times, high employment, low crime rates, good schools and great local services all within easy reach.
Colin will be speaking to us in more detail about the council’s strategy and plans to build a stronger economy, enhance economic resilience and strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders including educational establishments and economic development agencies. Colin will also provide an overview of some of the programmes and initiatives that the council provide to support businesses of all sizes in the area. Join us on Thursday 30th March at Banbridge Enterprise Centre.
